Here at Pick My Reader, we have a pretty busy mailbox.

As we get asked lots of the same questions time and again, we thought we’d curate them and answer everyone at the same time. We respond to all our messages personally, but thought this was a great opportunity to share some common concerns about e-readers.

E-Reader FAQs

  1. Do e-readers have good battery life?

  2. Why should I buy an e-reader instead of a tablet which does so much more?

  3. What are the benefits of reading e-books rather than physical books?

  4. Once I buy my book, will it always be available?

  5. Is it true that e-readers prevent you from sleeping?

    1) Do e-readers have good battery life?

Absolutely! If you’re accustomed to smart phones that need charging daily, often multiple times daily, you’ll be blow away by Kindle’s battery life. Typically marketed as returning “weeks of reading”, battery life is anywhere from 10 to 40 hours depending on brightness settings. You should last days, potentially weeks, before needing to give your Kindle a boost.

    2) Why should I buy an e-reader instead of a tablet which does so much more?

Firstly, it’s undeniable that you get much more flexibility with a tablet. These benefits can turn into distractions when you’re reading, though. With a dedicated e-reader, you can focus on your novel rather than being bombarded by Facebook notifications or sidetracked by incoming email. If you’re looking for a pure reading experience, tablets can’t compete with e-readers.

    3) What are the benefits of reading e-books rather than physical books?

To start with, e-books are normally cheaper than physical books. Also, if you are traveling or otherwise unable to easily access books, you’ll have a steady supply of e-books wherever you happen to be. Search functions make e-reading a seamless experience, especially useful for students. When you’re on the move, you can take an entire library with you in your bag rather than needing to think about how many books you need for your trip.

    ""

    4) Once I buy my book, will it always be available?

Absolutely. It’s the gift that keeps on giving.

    5) Is it true that e-readers prevent you from sleeping?

The jury is out. Some people feel that light-emitting e-readers can lead to lower quality sleep. Many satisfied Kindle users, on the other hand, find reading e-books in bed is perfectly fine and in no way impairs sleep.
